This past Wednesday, the 2nd of November, Pangea hosted our first documentary screening! The Biggest Little Farm, suggested by one of our board members, is a touching and inspiring film about a couple from Los Angeles, pursuing their dream of running an organic farm. Throughout their story, we get to witness the positive impact that people, whether it be their mentor, the volunteer workers or the couple themselves, can have on our surroundings. Birth, death, idealism and compromise were all present, tied together with the beautiful landscapes of northern California. Specifically, spectators loved the presence of so many animals and their interconnected relationships, such as the one forming between a chicken and a pig. The documentary overall taught lessons of patience, through taking the time to reflect on current problems to eventually find natural solutions.
Our idea behind this event, similar to that of a book club, was that a group of students could simply get together, watch a documentary and have a casual discussion about it directly afterwards. This simple concept allowed for a lighthearted, engaging and fruitful conversation to flourish. Although all participants appeared to be interested and knowledgeable, we noticed that there were different approaches to this documentary. Some provided deepened analysis of the rhetoric and analogies used, while others were prompted to reflect upon their own lives and futures. If they can do it, should we? However, a lot of well deserved criticism was also brought up, as the film’s portrayal of circular farming was considered too idealistic. Indeed, the owners were not limited by their finances as they came from a position of privilege. This allowed them not to worry about their lack of profit, which lasted several years and did not impact their living standards. Overall, the atmosphere of the screening felt welcoming and supportive, and I loved hearing the input of our generation on such a relevant subject.
Lastly, we’d like to thank everyone for their participation! It was sincerely appreciated, and only made us want to keep hosting such events. The format was interactive and fun, and there are so many topics out there that we could cover in the future. Suggestions for future documentaries are welcomed and encouraged, and hopefully we’ll see you all again soon!
